Colorful Playful Kids Room Makeover: KURA & SMÅSTAD - Roomellow

Designing a kids’ room is one of those projects that really lets you flex your creative muscles. It’s not just about picking out furniture; it’s about crafting a world where imagination can run wild, dreams can take flight, and everyday play feels like an adventure. But let's be real, it also needs to be practical, durable, and not break the bank. That’s why I was so excited to dive into this recent Roomellow transformation – a colorful and playful kids' room that truly checks all those boxes, making smart choices without sacrificing an ounce of fun.

The Before

A cluttered kids' room with mismatched furniture, toys scattered on the floor, and plain white walls. Before its Roomellow refresh, this room felt a bit…lost. It had good bones, with ample natural light and a decent footprint, but it lacked any real sense of character or purpose. We saw a mix of hand-me-down furniture that didn't quite fit the scale of the room, leaving empty, awkward spaces. Toys were scattered, and storage was clearly an afterthought. The walls were a neutral beige, which isn't inherently bad, but it left the space feeling a bit flat and uninspired for a child. This room was a blank slate, begging for a dose of personality, organization, and, most importantly, joy.

The After

A vibrant and organized kids' room featuring a loft bed, a smaller reversible bed, a toddler bed, and colorful play items. What a difference a thoughtful design makes! Stepping into the "after" is like entering a cheerful, organized wonderland. Our goal was to create distinct zones for sleeping, playing, and even a little quiet time, all while injecting that vibrant, playful spirit.

The star of the show for maximizing space is the SMÅSTAD Loft bed. At $949, this isn't just a bed; it's a command center for a kid's room. It beautifully combines a sleeping area with a desk for homework or creative projects underneath, and built-in wardrobes for fantastic storage. We chose it in white to keep the major structural elements bright and allow the colorful accents to pop. It’s incredibly efficient for a shared room or a child who needs dedicated space for various activities.

For additional sleeping arrangements that grow with the kids, we incorporated two fantastic options. The KURA Reversible bed for $299 is an absolute design genius. You can use it as a low bed or flip it to have a raised bed with space for a fort or play area underneath – perfect for imaginative play or even tucking away some toys. Its light wood finish and clean lines contribute to the room's airy feel. Beside it, for a younger sibling or guest, we opted for the SLÄKT / NATTAPA Ext bed frm w guard rl+slat bd base at $269. This toddler bed is extendable, meaning it adapts as the child grows, and the guard rail provides that essential peace of mind. Both beds are incredibly versatile and budget-friendly, which I absolutely love.

Of course, a kids' room needs dedicated play items! The DUKTIG 14-piece vegetables set for a mere $12.99 is a delightful touch. While listed in the system as a "kids' table" in this instance, we envisioned it as part of a charming play kitchen setup or a small grocery stand, encouraging hours of imaginative role-play. It adds a lovely dash of color and texture. And for active play and easy cleanup, the SPORTSLIG Ball storage/goal at $29.99 is brilliant. It’s a literal goal for target practice and a clever way to keep sports balls off the floor. It’s proof that functional pieces can also be playful and contribute to the overall aesthetic.

What Makes This Design Work

There are a few key principles that make this colorful-playful kids' room not just pretty, but truly practical and inspiring for its young inhabitants.

First, maximizing vertical space and multi-functional furniture is paramount in any kids' room, especially one that might need to accommodate more than one child or activity. The SMÅSTAD Loft bed is a textbook example. By lifting the bed, you free up valuable floor space for a desk, storage, or even another play area. This isn't just clever; it's essential for creating a room that doesn't feel cramped despite its many functions. Similarly, the KURA reversible bed offers adaptability for different stages of childhood – a low bed for a younger child or a high bed for a secret hideout. It's about getting the most mileage out of every piece you bring into the room.

Next, we focused on creating zones for different activities without permanent dividers. You can see how the placement of the loft bed naturally creates a "study nook," while the lower beds and open floor space invite active play. The SPORTSLIG ball storage helps define a play corner for sports activities, keeping the larger floor area clear for other games. Even the DUKTIG vegetables, while a small item, anchor a spot for imaginative play. This approach makes the room feel larger and more organized, guiding children through their activities seamlessly, but without rigid boundaries.

Finally, the thoughtful use of color and texture is what truly brings the "colorful-playful" aspect to life. Notice how the larger furniture pieces – the beds and storage units – are primarily neutral whites and light wood. This acts as a calm, bright canvas. It allows us to introduce pops of vibrant color through bedding, rugs, playful wall decor, and even the toys themselves, like the DUKTIG set. This prevents the room from feeling overwhelmingly busy, ensuring it remains stimulating yet restful. The varied textures from the wooden beds, the fabric of the bedding, and the playful items add depth and tactile interest, which is so important for a child's sensory development.
