Shop the Look: A Biophilic Backyard Patio Under an Old Pergola

Shop the look of a real backyard patio makeover: a bare concrete patio under a weathered pergola becomes a biophilic outdoor living room, every piece from one store.

Backyard patio after: oval wood dining table, cream outdoor sofa under a wood pergola, woven chaise and white planters beneath live oak trees

Most "shop the look" home decor posts show you a room you will never have. This one starts with a backyard a lot of people do have: a plain concrete patio, a weathered wood pergola, a lawn, and some very big trees. A Roomellow user uploaded this photo and chose the biophilic style, design built around nature, light and living materials. Roomellow then placed eight real products, all from Lulu and Georgia, into the space.

Below is the before, the after, and every product with its price, so you can shop the look or borrow the ideas for your own patio.

The Before

Before: an empty concrete patio under a weathered wood pergola, with large live oak trees, a lawn, a wood fence, a garden shed and a small wooden step by the back door

The bones are wonderful. Mature live oaks shade the whole patio, one of them grows up through a gravel square beside the pergola, and the pergola itself has the silvery, weathered wood you cannot buy new. But the slab is bare, and an empty patio this size reads as a driveway, not a room. The challenge was to furnish it without hiding what makes it special: the trees.

The After: A Biophilic Patio You Can Shop

After: an oval wood dining table with woven chairs under the trees, a cream outdoor sofa beneath the pergola, two accent chairs, a woven wave-shaped chaise, a round stone-look side table and white planters by the house

The patio now works as two outdoor rooms. Under the open sky to the left is a dining area built around the Gilda Outdoor Oval Dining Table, whose warm wood top and soft oval shape fit between the tree trunks better than a hard-cornered rectangle would. Under the pergola, the cream Gracen Outdoor Sofa turns the covered half into a lounge, with the pergola as its ceiling.

Accent chairs fill in the lounge, led by the Andover Outdoor Accent Chair by Amber Lewis x Four Hands on the left: a wood frame with curved black metal arms and thick white cushions. The design's woven piece is the Atti Outdoor Accent Chair, a hand-woven back on a wood frame; the render turned its woven look into the chairs around the dining table. In front of the sofa, the Lido Indoor / Outdoor Round Side Table is a round, stone-look pedestal, heavy enough to feel permanent on a patio. The scene-stealer is the Omura Indoor / Outdoor Chaise, a woven base that curves like a wave under a white cushion, angled toward the lawn.

Then come the plants, which matter more than anything else in a biophilic space. The Bradford Planters by Campania International line up by the back door in soft white, filled with tropical greens. The Gemi Stackable Planters by Ferm Living sit in the gravel square around the oak, so the tree itself becomes part of the design.

These eight pieces were placed in this patio by Roomellow and are real products you can buy from Lulu and Georgia. Prices are for one of each. One note on accuracy: the four woven chairs around the dining table are the render's interpretation, and the closest real piece in this design is the Atti accent chair, which has a woven back on a wood frame. Pillows and tabletop accessories are styling, not part of the list.

Pergola Patio Ideas to Borrow

Split the patio into zones. Dining in the open, lounging under the pergola. The pergola already defines a room, so let it be the living room and give the dining table the open sky.

Choose shapes that suit the trees. Oval tables, round side tables and a curved chaise move around trunks and roots more easily than straight lines, and they echo the organic shapes overhead.

Keep the palette to wood, weave and white. With this much green around, cream cushions and natural materials let the trees be the color. That restraint is the core of biophilic interior design.

Plant at the base of what you already have. The stackable planters around the oak cost a fraction of the furniture and do as much for the space as any chair.
