Living room reveal after: cream modular sectional, round brass coffee table and wood console in front of a wood-slat wall and corner stone fireplace

A good living room reveal before and after shows what changed and why it works. This one starts with a completely empty room, and an unusual one: a wall of horizontal wood slats, a stacked-stone fireplace tucked into the corner, a vaulted ceiling and a glass door out to a deck. Strong architecture, but nowhere to sit and no obvious place for a sofa.

A Roomellow user uploaded this photo and chose Japandi, the mix of Japanese restraint and Scandinavian comfort. Roomellow then placed 12 real products from eight stores into the room. Here is the before, the after, and every piece in it.

The Before

Before: an empty living room with dark hardwood floors, a horizontal wood-slat accent wall, a corner stacked-stone fireplace, two windows and a glass door to a deck

The room had a lot going for it: warm hardwood floors, plenty of daylight from two tall windows and the deck door, and two features most living rooms would love to have. It also had the problem those features create. With a fireplace in the corner, a slat wall wired for a TV, and a door on the far wall, there is no single obvious wall to push a sofa against. Put the sofa in the wrong place and you either block the deck door or turn your back on the fireplace.

The After: A Calm Japandi Living Room Reveal

After: a cream modular sectional split into two facing pieces, a round coffee table on antique-brass legs, a wood console under a framed landscape drawing, linen-colored curtains and potted plants

The answer was to float the seating instead of lining it up against a wall. The Bliss 4-Piece Sectional from Star Furniture is modular, so it is split into two cream sections that face each other across the room: one with its back to the open floor, one under the windows. Together they make a conversation area that faces neither the fireplace nor the TV wall head-on, so both stay part of the room.

In the middle sits the Albion Coffee Table in Antique Brass from Olivia's: a round, light top on sculpted brass legs. The round shape matters here. With seating on two sides and a lounge chair on a third, a round table keeps every path around it clear. Underneath, the Ahana Handwoven Runner from The Citizenry adds a cream, textured weave that ties the two sofa sections together.

The Dweller Chair from Neighbor closes the loop with a pale wood frame and a deep cream cushion. It is low and open-sided, so it adds a seat without blocking the view to the deck.

Against the slat wall, the Citra Brown Mango Wood 85" TV Stand from Living Spaces picks up the wall's warm wood tone instead of fighting it. Above it, the Countryside Drawing from McGee & Co is a quiet pencil landscape in a natural frame, and the Arnoux Table Lamp from Lulu and Georgia gives the console a warm evening glow. Beside the fireplace, the Abner Floor Lamp, also from Lulu and Georgia, lights the corner the fireplace leaves dark.

The Alabaster Beige Pinch Pleat Signature Velvet Blackout Curtains from Half Price Drapes soften the windows and make the ceiling feel even taller when hung high. Finally, three pieces from Lulu and Georgia bring in the living green Japandi rooms rely on: the Construct Drum Planter by Marie Michielssen x Serax, the speckled Esera Terrazzo Planter, and the striped Brura Vase by Ferm Living holding a few branches on the coffee table.

What Makes This Reveal Work

It works with the architecture, not against it. The slat wall and the stone fireplace are the room's personality, so nothing tall or busy competes with them. The console sits low, the drawing is quiet, and the lamps are slim. If you are curious why that restraint feels so calm, our guide to Japandi interior design goes deeper.

The seating floats. A corner fireplace usually forces an awkward compromise. Splitting a modular sectional into two facing pieces gives you a conversation area that acknowledges the fireplace, the TV wall and the deck at once, with clear paths between them.

The palette is narrow on purpose. Cream upholstery, warm wood, a little antique brass and real plants. With the floor and the slat wall already bringing so much wood, a short palette keeps the room from feeling heavy.
