Japandi Living Room Makeover: Green Velvet Modular Sectional
A dated brown living room becomes a serene Japandi retreat around a light green modular sectional. See the before and after plus every shoppable piece.
By Roomellow Team

Sometimes, a room just needs a breath of fresh air. It needs a moment to reset, to shed the clutter and embrace a sense of calm. That's exactly what happened with this living room, which started out stuck in a previous decade. Our goal was to infuse it with the serene balance of Japandi style — warm wood, muted green, and a modular sectional that keeps the generous floor plan feeling airy.
The Before
Before its Roomellow transformation, this living room was living firmly in the past: olive-brown walls, shiny satin valances over the blinds, and a brown leather recliner marooned in the middle of the floor. The bones were genuinely good — a corner fireplace, big bright windows, warm wood floors and plenty of square footage — but the heavy browns swallowed the light, and the furniture arrangement gave the room no center of gravity. It was comfortable for one person and a remote control, not for company.
The After: A Japandi Oasis with a Modular Sectional
What a difference! We leaned into the Japandi aesthetic, which marries Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian functionality and comfort. The result is a living room that feels incredibly intentional, inviting, and thoughtfully designed.
The star of the show is undeniably the Travie Light Green Performance Corduroy Velvet Modular Sofa. At $1,547, this isn't just a sofa; it's a statement of comfort and adaptability. We picked the modular style specifically for its flexibility – the same modules that fill this generous room could be pared back to fit a far smaller one. The light green corduroy velvet adds an incredible layer of texture and a pop of muted color that feels both natural and sophisticated. It’s performance fabric too, so you don't have to sacrifice style for durability.
Anchoring the seating area is the Felloe Coffee Table ($1,100). Its long, low profile and warm wood tone are quintessential Japandi. It's a piece that brings nature indoors, and its soft lines contrast beautifully with the sofa's modular geometry. It’s also low-profile, which helps maintain the airy, open feel of the room.
Underneath, the Babai New Zealand Wool Rug | Green ($84) adds another layer of soft texture and a grounding splash of color. Wool is a fantastic natural material, and the rug's abstract green-and-ivory pattern picks up the sofa's color without competing. It defines the seating zone, making the room feel more cohesive.
Across from the sofa, the Dweller Chair ($1,500) provides an elegant counterpoint. Its clean lines and comfortable profile scream modern simplicity. We chose it for its sculptural quality and the way it offers individual seating without adding bulk.
Lighting is key in Japandi design, and the Berklee Floor Lamp ($314.99) delivers both ambient light and a sleek, minimalist form. Its slender silhouette doesn't demand too much visual real estate, letting the other pieces shine. For task lighting and a touch of art, the Portis Combed Round Table Lamp ($1,299) on the media unit is a truly unique piece. Its sculptural ceramic base and diffused light are a lovely addition.
The Everyday Media Unit, Oak ($1,990), is another example of Japandi function and form. Its simple, sturdy oak construction provides essential storage without any unnecessary frills, letting the natural wood grain be the hero.
Above the fireplace, the Olive Wall Art by Jess Engle ($799) brings in an abstract, earthy element. Its soft greens and organic shapes reinforce the natural theme and add depth to the wall without being overly busy.
Finally, the Gravity Ivory Italian Faux Linen Room Darkening Curtains ($55.75 per panel) soften the windows and provide practical light control. Their faux linen texture adds warmth, and the ivory color keeps the room feeling bright and open. A Yucca Plant Multi Stem ($229) brings essential greenery and life, while the unique Egeo Vase by Al Centro Ceramica ($204) adds an artisanal, handcrafted touch. What Makes This Design Work: Layering Japandi Principles
This Japandi living room isn't just a collection of beautiful pieces; it’s a masterclass in several key design principles working in harmony.
First, texture play is paramount here. We’ve layered materials like the plush corduroy velvet of the Travie sofa with the natural wool of the Babai rug, the smooth wood of the Felloe coffee table, and the artisanal ceramic of the Egeo vase and Portis lamp. This creates a rich sensory experience without relying on bold colors or patterns. Each material has its own story and adds depth to the overall aesthetic, making the room feel inviting and tactile.
Second, the calm, cohesive color palette is essential. The dominant hues are muted greens, warm oak, and crisp ivory. This limited palette fosters a sense of tranquility and prevents the space from feeling overwhelmed. The greens connect to nature, while the natural wood and ivory provide a grounding, airy foundation. It’s about creating visual harmony where every color feels like it belongs.
Finally, we focused on thoughtful scale and flow. The modular nature of the Travie sofa allows it to adapt to the room's dimensions without feeling bulky — and if your own space is tighter, the same thinking applies at a smaller scale (we cover it in our guide to sectional sofas for small living rooms). The low-profile Felloe coffee table and media unit maintain an open sightline, enhancing the feeling of spaciousness. Even the Berklee floor lamp and Dweller chair, while distinct, are chosen for their lean forms and how they contribute to an uncluttered, breathable environment. This careful consideration of size ensures the room feels balanced and serene. To see more transformations, check out AI interior design with real furniture.
